Emerald Green Media is the company behind Ireland Before You Die (IB4UD) and Meanwhile in Ireland (MII). Our content covers Irish travel, culture, humour, quirky news and viral social media stories.
Across our platforms, we have over 800,000 followers on Ireland Before You Die and over 1 million on Meanwhile in Ireland. We’re looking for freelance writers to contribute to both websites, supported by an editorial and digital team with over 10 years of industry experience.
This opportunity is ideal for someone starting their writing career, looking to gain publishing experience, or interested in writing as a hobby alongside other commitments.
You’ll build a portfolio of published work, receive editorial feedback and gain experience using WordPress, applying SEO principles and preparing articles for publication.
This is a commission-only freelance opportunity, with no fixed salary, hourly rate or guaranteed payment per article. Please read the earnings section below before applying.
We ask writers to contribute four articles per week across our two websites. Articles are generally 450–750 words, depending on the topic and brief.
Topics include:
Irish travel and places
Culture, humour and trivia
Light news and social media stories
Lists, roundups and articles designed to start a conversation
You’ll choose titles from our topic sheets, research and fact-check your articles, and upload them as drafts in WordPress. You’ll also format your work and add suitable images that are cleared for use.
An editor reviews each article before publication and provides feedback. New ideas are welcome, but you’ll need editorial approval before writing them. We use Slack to coordinate assignments and feedback.
The work is remote, with flexible hours, provided you meet the agreed weekly output and respond to editorial feedback. Please consider the time involved in researching, writing, uploading and revising articles when applying.

We have a limited number of places on the team, so consistent participation matters. If your availability changes, please let us know so we can discuss whether the arrangement still works for both sides.
You must currently live on, or have previously lived on, the island of Ireland for an extended period. This should give you first-hand knowledge of Irish places, everyday life and culture.
You can work remotely from elsewhere if you meet this requirement. Brief visits or research alone do not meet our criteria.
Writers receive 50% of the advertising revenue attributed to their published articles during the agreed earnings window.
This window runs from publication until the end of the following month, giving each article approximately 30–60 days of earnings, depending on when it goes live. Commission applies to this defined window, rather than the article’s lifetime revenue.
Earnings depend on article performance and advertising revenue and can fluctuate considerably. While payments can be lucrative, some articles may earn very little or nothing, so we cannot promise a particular income from one article or a set number of articles. Please only apply if you understand and are comfortable with this commission-only arrangement. We would not recommend this opportunity if you need a full-time role, a stable income or a guaranteed return for the time you spend writing.
We provide performance and earnings reports so you can see how your commission is calculated. Full commission terms, including the reporting and payment schedule, will be provided before you accept the freelance agreement.
We ask you to aim to contribute at least 10 articles, giving you time to experience the publishing process, receive feedback and decide whether the opportunity suits you. While writing with us, we ask that you give each article your best effort, work closely with our editorial team and take feedback on board.
